The lake has had some pollution problems in the past few years. An algae bloom several years ago has people still talking. The rains from last summer's hurricane season are responsible for the lake level rising 9 feet above normal, swamping docks and piers, houses and low-lying fields. After asking around before we arrived at the lake, we were told numerous times that swimming is safe, and the prettiest place to swim is from the beach west of San Marcos. There is no beach, because of the high water, but the rocks offer a marvlous place for sunning and climbing out of the water. The lake is even prettier IN it than BESIDE it.
Stuart enjoyed the water from the rocks...
I captured this shot from the high rocks, west of San Marcos. We climbed up here one afternoon, and found a Mayan ceremonial circle. The view is stunning from up here.
There is another village, San Juan la Laguna, just out of view in this photo, and we'll go there. Manana.
Yet another view from up high on the rocks. The lake is turquoise, not green and not blue. It's the dry season, so many trees have no leaves now, making the orchids growing in them more visible.
